About the Mayo Clinic
The Mayo Clinic has been the heart of Rochester since it's founding in 1889 in partnership with the Sisters of Saint Francis. Rochester physician William W. Mayo had been practicing in the community alongside his son, William J. Mayo, when a tornado struck the community in 1883 taking the lives of 37 and injuring 200 more. In response to the tragedy, the father and son organized the relief effort and called upon Mother Alfred Moes at the nearby convent to enlist their support as nursing staff. This partnership proved to be impactful and Mother Moes proposed to W.W. Mayo that he and his sons, the aforementioned William J. Mayo and the now recently graduated Charles H. Mayo provide medical care at a hospital fundraised by the Sisters of Saint Francis. They agreed, and on September 30, 1889 the St. Mary Hospital opened.
In the first few years of operation, other physicians joined the private practice making it a multi-specialty practice with many partners. In 1919, the Mayo Family donated many of their assets to make the Mayo Clinic a not-for-profit organization. The Mayo Medical School (now Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine) opened in 1972 and in 1986 the Mayo Clinic united the original St. Mary's Hospital with Rochester Methodist Hospital. The Clinic now boasts campuses in Jacksonville, FL, Phoenix, AZ, and London, as well as health sites across Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa.
The Mayo Clinic has been ranked number one for seven consecutive years on the Best Hospitals Honor Roll by U.S. News and World Report, and in the Top 100 Places to Work For by Fortune Magazine for fourteen consecutive years. The Clinic employs 7,300 physicians and scientists as well as 66,000 supporting staff including administrative professionals and health professionals.
